What Silk is Thankful For: Our People
As the Thanksgiving holiday draws closer, I wanted to take a moment to share just how thankful we are at Silk for our amazing employees—the people who work together to make the company a success.
Brains and Passion
At Silk, we pride ourselves on finding (and hiring) team members who are extremely bright and passionate. We want employees who are the best of the best in what they do – whether that’s sales, engineering, customer support, marketing, or administration. Of course, even the brightest employee can find their drive to do top-notch work diminish if they aren’t excited about what they’re working on. That’s why we look for employees who are passionate about what Silk is doing and who look forward to coming into the office every day to reach that goal.
We are a small, team-oriented company, so it’s very important that employees check their egos at the door. We believe in open communication and welcome honest feedback from employees – no matter what their role is. For example, earlier this week, the Marketing team called me into a meeting they were having about new content they were writing for the website. They wanted to make sure it made sense and that they weren’t going down a “corporate-speak rabbit hole”. How many companies have a cross-functional relationship like that where Marketing seeks out HR’s opinion about web copy?
At the same time, you need to have a willingness to roll up your sleeves and pitch in wherever needed. My first week at Silk, I caught one of the execs emptying out the dishwasher in the kitchen. The office administrator was busy at the time and dirty dishes were piling up in the sink… so he took it upon himself to clean up. Like I said: no egos allowed!
Joining the Silk Squad
When a new team member joins the company, they become an important part of the Silk Squad. Have a mid-day doctor’s appointment or need to leave early to make it to your kids’ soccer game on time? Need flexible vacation time to take advantage of a once-in-a-life trip? Not a problem. We trust our employees to take care of business — freely sharing their experience, expertise, and insights with us — and in return we empower them to make decisions that bring balance to their personal and professional lives.
Work Hard, Play Hard, and Give Back
Silk employees work hard, but we believe that having a sense of fun is important too. Remember that meeting with Marketing I mentioned earlier? Well right after we talked “business” we immediately had an impromptu dance party to Macklemore. Unusual? Yes. Did it jump start my day in a positive way? Most definitely!
One activity we regularly host is a weekly happy hour. For new employees attending their first happy hour, we ask them to share a bit about themselves and tell a joke as an ice breaker. It’s a fun way to introduce someone to the team and, personally, it’s my favorite Silk tradition. We also frequently host other events for employees to look forward to. Whether it’s a Halloween costume contest or our annual summer family outing, we’re always looking for fun, new opportunities to show our employees how much they matter to us.
At the same time, we strongly believe in contributing to the communities we call home. Our employees are passionate about multiple causes and we all feel strongly in giving back as much as possible. In the past few months, Needham office employees have participated in volunteer opportunities including building houses with Habitat for Humanity, making peanut sandwiches for a local homeless shelter, and participating in a holiday toy drive. Research shows that doing good does you good – and volunteering together is probably the best team building activity we can do!
So from our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving! We’re thankful for all of our employees and for the amazing year that we’ve had, and we look forward to all that we’ll accomplish in 2020!
