The path of lift and shift may look easy. But it doesn’t prepare you for what lies ahead. The kraken awaits - slowing performance to a crawl with his paralyzing grasp. If using IaaS or PaaS and the cloud provider’s data options (Azure Ultra SSD, AWS EBS, GCP SSD), his grip becomes tighter, and you’re limited to the maximums of the disks.
Fastest route, no refactor required, very hands-on, but can experience scalability issues
Beware the irresistible pull of the sirens. Sure they hold a lot of promise, but if one goes down into the bottom of the deep blue sea, they will bring your mission-critical apps down along with it. Money, productivity and credibility lost, before you even realize what’s happened. Beware and protect your workloads by architecting for resilience. Look to the cloud provider’s backup, site recovery, and availability zones to steer clear of the downtime sirens. And distribute your data across multiple cloud “ships” so if one goes down, your applications can stay up and running.
A bit longer, requires some rearchitecting and refactoring, fewer administrative tasks, yet performance is limited to cloud provider offerings
Many have entered, few have returned.
This single-cloud paradise promises you the world. But leaving paradise is harder than you think. The risk of refactoring to get to the cloud is so high and the time it takes is too long. You’re only going to want to make that journey once. So we end up staying. Marooned. At the mercy of our cloud vendor’s roadmap, upgrade schedule, pricing, and support.
In the cloud, there be riches. But tread carefully ye who enter. The deeper you go and the more you invest, the closer the sharks will circle around your purse strings. Need more performance? They begin to nip at your heels. Need to quickly scale? They start to chomp deeper into your budget. Soon, you’re left overprovisioning for VMs you don’t need to get the performance you want… and your budget has been completely eaten away.
Before beginning your journey, be sure to include Silk in your cargo. The Silk Platform helps you set the smoothest course. Silk offers you 10x the performance of native cloud, making it possible to outrun the kraken. Separating your workloads from the cloud, Silk acts as a protector against the downtime sirens, ensuring you’re never dragged down to Davy Jones’ locker. This same protector gives your sails wings to soar out of Lock-In Cove as needed. And with its ability to separate the cost of performance with the amount of cloud resources, Silk keeps you from spilling blood (and your budget) in shark infested waters. So if it be the treasure of the cloud ye seek, consider Silk your first mate. And don’t forget the rum!
You’ve discovered the riches of the cloud, matey! Enjoy swashbuckling agility and unstoppable scalability. But if you find you’re stuck drowning along the path to the cloud, don’t jump ship just yet!
